Too enraged to sit, he paced the length of the sizeable study, grimacing and cursing under his breath, impatient to drown his friend in a torrent of complaint. His last turn from the window at the other end of the room brought him up before the picture of a lady from his past. Emily. He had loved her once, years ago before he had joined the navy as an arrogant youth out to destroy tyranny. Three years away had been too many, and she had married another. Her soft, lovely eyes reminded him of the way he had once been able to feel about a woman, entirely besotted and fighting to hold any other thought in his head but of her. He wondered when this part of him had died. Was it in the navy in the company of death? Had the need to kill killed his ability to love? Or had it died a slow death in the arms of the scores of plotting, greedy debutantes siphoning away his tenderness?

Work-In-Progress Wednesday! Just a little teaser.
Hope you enjoy this quote from my WIP. I'm almost to the end of the first draft. Exciting!
Since he now understood the impossibility of finding himself in that part of her heart where she guarded a great love for other persons and places, he decided that he must remain an anonymous benefactor. Better for her to think another that savior on whom she and her family could look with gratitude. He shuddered at the idea that she would feel herself beholden to him, that her affection should stem from gratitude rather than a regard wholly unconnected to obligation. If she were ever to look on him with favor, he never wanted that favor to be the result of something as paltry as gratitude. What man whose whole body and soul burned with love wanted the object of that love to look on him with mere gratitude? He stopped and looked out the last in the row of windows and answered the question aloud. “I had rather be the object of her hate!” He about-faced and moved toward the stairs, not the least deterred in his purpose and now even more impatient to see the whole business through to its end.

Re-post of my Review of Illuminations of the Heart by Joyce Di Pastena.
I just have to re-post my review of this excellent book in case you missed it. I recently finished reading Illuminations of the Heart by Joyce Di Pastena, and I would have to say it is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read; I did not want to put it down. The characters are strong, the romantic tension is powerful and unrelenting, and the description is masterful. I fell "head over ears" in love with the hero. His intensity and the elements of mystery woven around his character engaged me from the first chapter. He is deep, passionate, gentle, loving, and strong, and I was in love with him from his first appearance in the book. I lived this story with Siri, the heroine, who wins the hero's love over the course of this dramatic odessy. She kept me at her side through all of her challenges. The story overflows with conflict and surprise twists, and the characters' individual "do or die" motivations are wonderfully intertwined. This book will amaze you!
